As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, we sat down this week with David Vasilescu, owner of Yellow Brick Nursery.

Tell us a bit about your business:  What does your business offer, and how long have you been around?
Yellow Brick Nursery is a retail/wholesale plant nursery that offers some of Houston's favorite flowers, trees and shrubs! We have been open for about three months now.

How did you decide to get involved in this line of work and how did the business get started?
Around seven years ago I started by growing trees as a hobby. Learning how to keep plants healthy and thriving took a lot of trial and error until I found a system that worked for me. My hobby was GROWING into a business and I began selling trees online. Slowly I started diversifying and growing shrubs and annuals, building my way to opening a retail front. We offer all your favorites, even vegetables.

Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
We’re known for our customer service. I want Yellow Brick Nursery to be a place where you can come in and get ideas, answers and inspiration. We want to help you “grow” your ideas. Whether you are starting from scratch, seeking suggestions or building your landscaping dream, we're here to help you succeed.

Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best?
I really enjoy working with all of our nursery plants and our customers. We are a new business but have customers who come back again and again to add to their yard and gardens, ask questions and share plant stories. Every day I learn something new from our customers. This allows Yellow Brick Nursery to be a valuable part of the community and continue to grow together. My favorite customer is genuinely interested in plants. Whether they are making sure they pick out the best plants for their yard, have questions about plant placement, or are just starting out, helping our customers create beautiful outdoor spaces is very satisfying.

Can you tell us something about yourself as the business owner? What is your background?
I've been interested in plants all my life. As a young boy I helped plant vegetables and maintain the gardens. It’s as if my parents planted a seed in me. Now, Yellow Brick Nursery is an extension of this growth and as a family-owned business, we take pride in being a part of the community and helping keep our neighbors green and growing.

Are there any special promotions, annual sales, or special events that you'd like to mention?
We are running a sale on azaleas! $14.99 buy 4 and get your 5th FREE! Later in the summer we'll be wheeling out some large savings on an assortment of our trees! Follow us on Facebook for more bargains!

Is there any other information you'd like your potential customers/clients to know about your business?
Our goal is to help add some beauty to our ever expanding Yellow Brick Nursery community. We plan on expanding our crew to better serve you. Eventually we will provide delivery and installation for our customers.
