Flu Season/Vaccine Info From MCPHD

The Montgomery County Public Health District wants to remind Montgomery County residents that this is the beginning of the flu season.

While there are many flu virus strains, the 2016-2017 vaccinations included the three to four most prevalent strains detected by research. These strains can vary from year to year.

Getting an annual flu vaccine is the first and best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu. A 2014 study showed that flu vaccine reduced children’s risk of flu-related pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission by 74% during flu seasons from 2010-2012. Another study published in the summer of 2016 showed that people 50 years and older who got a flu vaccine reduced their risk of being hospitalized from flu by 57%. The more people who are vaccinated, the more people will be protected from the flu. CDC also recommends everyday preventive actions (like staying away from people who are sick, covering coughs and sneezes and frequent handwashing) to help slow the spread of germs that cause respiratory (nose, throat, and lungs) illnesses, like flu.

Influenza, also known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms: fever or feeling feverish, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue or tiredness. Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults are. Most people who get influenza will recover in several days to less than two weeks, but some people will develop complications because of the flu.

Everyone six months and older should get a flu vaccine every year by the end of October. People who are more vulnerable to serious flu complications include older people, very young children, pregnant women and people with certain health conditions.

This year, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the use of flu shots only and not the nasal spray flu vaccine. Flu shots contain inactive influenza vaccine (IIV) and recombinant influenza vaccine (RIV). Nasal spray flu vaccines contain live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV). There are different flu shots; one shot vaccinates against three viruses and another against four viruses. Flu vaccines cause antibodies to develop in the body about two weeks after vaccination.
