Citizens Constable Academy - Week 3

Even though we didn't hear from a deputy last night, the information was just as insightful as the previous weeks. And most importantly, we learned how the courts and fire/rescue work seamlessly with the Pct. 4 Constables Office.

First we heard from Judge Claudia Laird who presides over Montgomery County Court at Law #2. She filled us in on the many levels of courts/judges in the County (and beyond), and what kinds of cases they oversee - both criminal and civil.

She is a great speaker by the way. She didn't talk over us, and even showed quite a bit of personality and humor throughout the evening. I don't know why I'm surprised at that... It's probably because I've never been in front of a judge before, and my only experience comes from quick videoclips of them online. I know it's terrible to stereotype, but when I saw her name on the list, my first thought was of Judge Judy. Emoticon (And I personally apologize to her for even thinking that.) That thought was immediately squashed the second I introduced myself to her. It was clear she was a very pleasant and approachable individual, and that became more an more apparent as she went through her presentation. She was just a regular person, talking to us other regular people. Emoticon

The second part of our Tuesday night double feature came in the form of a man who's his own hero. [Those are Sgt. Slack's words, not mine.] Emoticon

There's always banter between cops and fireman about who has the coolest job, and Lonnie Cantwell wins that argument EVERY time. How?? Because he is both! He is not only a Captain of East Montgomery County Emergency Services District 7, but he also serves the residents of Roman Forest as a police officer.

He talked to us about the area that EMCFD serves, their training, the different stations, and other facets of being a fireman of District 7.

One of the most interesting programs they have involves New Caney ISD students. The 2-year program offers them the opportunity to earn certifications with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (Basic Firefighter) and Texas Department of Health (EMT-Basic). These certifications allow graduating students the opportunity to begin a career as a professional firefighter. The NCISD Fire Academy program holds classes at both New Caney & Porter High School campuses, and is taught by Captain Kyle Romagus.

At the end of the class we were treated to a visit from a few of the brave men/women of EMCFD...Fresh off a fire call too. One of them happened to be from the most recent NCISD Fire Program class. Hunter Silcox, NCHS class of 2016, went straight to work at station 151 upon graduation. Emoticon

And speaking of students and emergency services, have you seen or heard of Shattered Lives?? We were shown the video below last night during class. I have seen it and others before, but it didn't matter. I don't see student/parent actors...I see myself crying over my daughter's body after some idiot decided to drink and drive. That's what I see! Emoticon Either way, watch the video below...Grab some tissues first.

Thank you, Judge Laird and Captain Cantwell for taking the time out of your busy schedules for us. I enjoyed learning more about the entities that serve us here in East Montgomery County. Emoticon
